Seduced by an iPhone

Well, almost. While I was in Guam, a buddy of mine had an extra "hacked" iPhone, and offered it to me. The iPhone really is a thing of beauty. You have to hand it to the design people at Apple. It's a gadget-man's dream. It's all screen, plus it's a computer, not some watered down operating system for a phone. You can receive and send email, view attachments like Word, Excel, and Adobe documents, store your photos and video, surf the web, store your music (it's an iPod too), and on.

I almost bought it, but in the end, I realized how intrusive the thing would become in my life. I really don't want to know every time I get an email. And I don't want to be one of those people who cannot tolerate any free mind-time -- you now, always texting, or talking, or listening through some earphones to something -- connected to people and things miles away, but unable to tolerate the risk of talking to the person next to them, unable to tolerate the silence of their own mind.

I like my mental wandering time. I like to drive with the radio off. I believe creativity lives in those spaces. I like going places without my cell phone. I decided the iPhone wouldn't make me more productive. It would just make me more distracted.

Still, it would be fun to push the buttons on the touchpad and make the silicone wafers do your bidding. Arrrrrr.

Is your friend still selling?

I'm going to be moving to Saipan from the mainland in a few weeks to start a job. Is it possible to use an iPhone in Saipan? Is service available?

thanks!
